Hi all,
I have 2 new thoughts on my pop up problems makinginternet explorer freze on certain websites, including playinginthe dark, where the top speed 2 game is. I was talking to Kelly Sapergia last night about this problem, and it seems he doesn't have that problem on the playing in the dark site. he said the ads sometimes hide themselves in the address bar, so I'm wondering if using the control o to open a url insteade of the address bar has anything to do with it or not, probably not, but just a thought. I use to use the address bar, until I heard Eric Damery use the control o instead, and it sounded just as easy, so i started opening pages that way instead. He told me it sounded like i had spy ware, which i did have, but I used adaware to remove the spyware and put it in the quaranteen folder, and I went back to playing in the dark, and i had the same problem. actuallky, another web site comes up in a separate window from playing in the dark, and when popup blocker comes up, jaws focusses on the other web page before i can do anything. The address of the other page which comes up is www.ilead.com, which had 8 links. the site didn't say what it was or anything, just edit fields and combo boxes for you to enter information, like your first and last name, city, state, age, date of birth. Also, I have google for my homepage, because someone told me it was faster, and my isp's home page is always coming up with the date and time, and jaws reads it several times. This soon became annoying, so changed my home page to google. Google does have ads, but only when you search for something, it has those sponsored links. So, is there any possibility that using the open dialogue or having google as a home page has anything to do with it? I just now delete3d my temporary internet files, and my cookies, and i still didn't go back to playing in the dark, because every time something doesn't help, I have the same problem, and ie locks up, and i have to reboot my computer, which isn't good for it. I seem to be the only one havintg this problem with sites like that. Oh, as soon as i rebooted my pc after ie locked up, I opened adaware, did another scan, and it found a critical object, can't remember or pronounce the name where it said it came from. So the spyware wasn'tfrom playinginthedark, but from the site that comes up in a new window when i go there. It doesn't come up til i enter on the link that says, click here to enter the site. I just don't get it. Sighs andshakes head in total bafflement

Hi WonderWoman.

Let me vent for a moment first. I wish you had added this topic to your other topic about pop-up blockers, so we'd have all the information in one place. Oh well, I'm through venting.

I doubt that having google as your home page does anything to cause this problem, in fact, I'm sure it doesn't. I have google as my home page with no problems.

Be very careful with that other site that comes up. You might have a trojan horse on your computer causing this site to come up. I recently had a similar problem, where a program brought up this particular site inviting me to do a scan for viruses. I feel sure that if I had clicked on it I would have been in a world of hurt. This second site that comes up might be a similar site.

What antivirus do you use? I used symantec which found footprints of the virus, but never found the .dll file it had attached itself to. However, AVG free edition found it in about twenty minutes and killed it for me.

Do others who use the site you are trying to go to have a similar problem?

Hope this helps.

Bob

first, i don't think the open dialog or google could be causing this problem, i've done both at one time or another. Second, i would get another anti-spyware tool, adaware will not get everything. spybot works very well and the jfwlite page has a couple more on it.. if you don't have anything other than adaware, get one of the programs there.

well I'm sort of scared of spybot search and destroy, but I guess I'll chance it. blbobby, the one who did the review of the topspeed2 doesn't have a problem, and as far as I know, noone else seems to be having this problem with it except me. I'm using avg free. I always say use freeware whenever possible. I had norton on my system when i first got it, but my hard drive seemed to grind almost constantly, so i called hp tech support, and the tech person there said i'd have to uninstall Norton system works, because it was taking up all my resources. after I uninstalled norton, I didn't have a problem with grinding, at least not nearly as much as i did to start with. Anyway, I used adaware and uninstalled all the spyware it found, 37 items in all, deleted my temporary internet files and deleted all my cookies, but still haven't gone back to that site, because I'm afraid it will happen again. Guess i'll have to take my courage in both hands and install spybot search and destroy. Sorry about the new topic, but I found sometimes people will tend to ignore a topic if it's brought up too frequently, and some are very picky about topics continually being brought up to the forefront. I'll know better next time, lol

Since my recent battle with a virus, I have adaware, spybot and windows defender; as well as an outdated version of norton antivirus (they wanted $75 to update), and an updated version of AVG free edition.

I still feel vulnerable at times.

hi bob
I get messages in my update manager from grisoft, but don't click on it, be cause i update my antivirus definitions every friday, which is when i have it set to update. I wanted to be sure it didn't want to update at the same day and time I had to update from microsoft with the windows updates, but since that windows genuine advantage thing came out, I haven't done any windows updates, because i'm afraidof windows genuine advantage, and it's more of an invasion of provacy thing, so no windows updates in a while. If it's a trojan horse kind of thing, why don't I have this problem on every site i go to? it's not just playinginthedark, but other sites, like classicreader.com, which has good old fiction on it, and freeopendiary.com. As i said, it seems to happen only on site where pages come up in a separate window.

windows genuine advantage is not an invation of privacy, look at their page about it. it is better since you get stuff that windows will support no matter what. read the page, then tell me microsoft is invading your privacy with this tool

Won't get into the windows genuine advantage thing: I held off for a while but haven't seen any bad ramifications from it since I installed it.

Is the site that pops up always the same one? If so, give us the url. and you might go to internet options, security settings, and put that URL in your restricted sites. Then it shouldn't bother you again.

bob, the site that keeps coming up is www.ilead.com, but since it's the site that keeps comng up everytime i go to playinginthe dark, I don't kinow that'd i'd recommend going to it outright. I don't want to see anyone's ie lock up on them and have to restart their machines, not that i have to do a cold reboot, the computer is still functioning, and jaws is still working, but when i have to reboot because of something like that, it seems a bit slower to reboot, and the grinding is a bit louder. Do you have to adjust your security settings to high before you canrestrict a site? I have m security settings set on intermediate. and rat, all I know is what someone said in the post i created abouit it. I'm sure i can dig that post and copy and paste the response, but i'veheard and even read in pc world magazine aboiut people having problems with wga saying they don't have a legal copy of windows when they do.

well, they most likely don't have a leagal copy. not all copies are leagal and this is a way for microsoft to at least catch some of the pirates, although i admit it is kind of stupid myself...

Checked on www.ilead.com for you.

I found one complaint about it being a bit of spyware at this site.

As you can see from that post, it seems to have been infected by something called messenger+. Do you have messenger+ on your machine?

The suggested solution in that post is rather elaborate, and, before I went through all that, I think I would get spybot, adaware and windows defender all three, and run them and let them get rid of anything malicious on your computer, then see if that takes care of the problem.

Hope this helps.

Hi bobby,
no I don't have messenger plus, just windows messenger and skype, and i don't get on either of those too often. Thanks though, I hope that ilead.com site didn't make yourbrowser get stuck like it did mine. Although, I still feel like it's a conflict between the sites that come up and pop up blocker, and just thought about turning pop up blocker off for sites which have ads, but i know aren't really harmful, but I'mn too cautious or too chicken to try doing it just in case i'm wrong, but I don't remember pop up sites making ie get stuck in win95 and 98.
